It is no secret that the number of homeless animals in our country is growing every year. However, this is not related to the behavior of animals or their characteristics, in this matter it is necessary to note the main factor in the emergence of such a category as homeless animals – it’s man himself. After all, it is because of the insecurity, irresponsibility and consciousness of a person, adult or child, that animals become unnecessary, superfluous in their lives and eventually end up on the streets. As examples, we can cite various situations: unscrupulous owners get rid of their pets, which they started without thinking properly; the child is reluctant to have a dog – after a while it has grown and needs attention, walks, and it turns out that the child is not ready, and adults do not have time and so on. In addition, human behavior with stray animals affects their reactions and behavior with humans – when aggressive people deliberately beat stray animals, scatter poison or broken glass in food to kill them, there is aggression by animals, they defend themselves.
Therefore, in order to save such animals from hard life, to ensure the improvement of their condition and living conditions, and ultimately to save them, we, ordinary people, can do many things. What exactly?
1. Become a volunteer. There is an acute shortage of staff in the shelters, so volunteering is a huge plus to karma. Animals miss without communication with people, they need to be supervised, so any help will be important and valuable. In addition, it is possible to help organize mass events in order to spread this problem and encourage those who are not indifferent to its solution.
2. Assist shelters, animal welfare organizations and charitable foundations. An example is the issuance of a monthly payment in favor of these organizations. Shelters often lack funding, so such assistance will be important.
3. Support the sterilization and vaccination program. To date, this is the most humane way to reduce the population of homeless animals, you only need to call the number and report stray animals. An example is the sterilization performed in Chernihiv within Novoselivka in the garages of a local pack of dogs. And this is not the only case.
4. Provide so-called “temporary overstay”. When volunteers and shelters are unable to take animals or they need some medical care, then you can shelter and care for the animal for a period of time. At the same time, volunteers are actively looking for new owners for her.
5. Take the homeless animal to your home. This is the best option, but not everyone has this opportunity.
6. Help the animals find a new home on their own. You can first use social networks to find out whether the owners have lost this animal. Then take her to the vet for a checkup. Eventually, either find a new family for the pet on your own or through acquaintances or an advertisement, or take it to a shelter. In Chernihiv, such a shelter is the veterinary sterilization center “Step to the Animals” of the Chernihiv City Council.
7. You can become a guardian or curator. This is possible if you can keep the animal in whole or in part, but there is no way to take it home. With the help of contributions you will provide the animal with everything it needs and you will be able to come to it and walk, as well as look for a permanent family.
8. Highlight and disseminate information on this issue. This can be done through the dissemination of photos, videos and posts, news from volunteers, animal welfare organizations on social networks. Also highlight your own participation in charity events and support for important initiatives.
9. Encourage others! There is no need to be silent about good deeds. Feel free to talk on social media about the kitten you took home from the street, about your volunteer experience or about the fact that you transferred the money to the shelter!
You see, helping animals is easy – just be careful and not pass by when someone needs help. After all, it is not always about money – it is more about humanity and the opportunity for a better life for those who are not guilty of anything, for those who suffer from the decisions of unscrupulous people. Therefore, the main thing is to start with yourself, with defining your own values in life, with the realization that such ordinary actions are a feat for those who can not express gratitude in words. However, it can be expressed through looks and behavior. Don’t stay away!
