What is the problem of Ukraine and is there a chance for better?

Lesya Mykhailenko.

The problem of our country is not only in corruption, as you might think in the first place. Corruption, crime, suicide, road accidents – all this is the result of the attitude of “people” to each other. Rich people use poor people in any way, took advantage of a person – and then threw away as “used raw materials” in the landfill (both figuratively and literally). Rich people buy everything – people’s lives, undeserved red diplomas for their children, a place in life, absolutely everything. Rich people decide who deserves to live, who should be imprisoned, and who should not…

People are afraid to tell the truth, to fight injustice, because they know that tomorrow “quite by accident” they may be hit by a car, or they will have a heart attack, of course, “quite by accident.”

People are angry because they are not heard, because society does not pay attention to their opinion, and therefore declare themselves to be murders, terrorism, violence, etc.

Of course, not all people are bad, fortunately, there are good people – although they are a minority.

The situation in our country is not the final verdict, it is possible to change everything for the better, especially since our country, Ukraine, is so beautiful, rich in chernozems and natural resources; our history of independence is so hard, it has suffered so much; we have such talented people in the country (PayPal, GlobalMoney, etc.). It is possible to change everything for the better if we value each other’s lives, if we fight for our rights, if we are not afraid to repel the rich, corruption, if we try to live honestly!

As an example of what is not yet lost, I would like to say a few words about one lawyer, a lawyer who was not afraid to go against the system, against the atrocities in the government and stood up to defend the rights of ordinary people. I’m talking about Stanislav Batryn, who in 2015 forced the government to change the consumer basket through the courts – unfortunately, the government did not change the consumer basket, because the people sitting there wanted to sneeze in court, and even more so on ordinary people.

Batrin also created the Open Court project, which ensures the transparency of the trial. The project envisages the creation of a video – a trial file, exposing the unprofessionalism and procedural violations by a judge, prosecutor and lawyer – in the interests of creating standards of justice. Such an innovation (free video recording of court hearings) exists only in Ukraine, and nowhere else on the planet, which is undoubtedly positive.

Of course, he has the advantage that he is a public figure, a well-known lawyer – but he also fights for the truth at the state level.

It is clear that you and I cannot do such great things, but we can fight the daily injustice that everyone can overcome: someone offended on the street, did not give up a seat on the bus, did not count the delivery in the store, underestimated grades at school, etc. Thus, the injustices in the world may be less if each of us honestly defends our rights, fights for ourselves! The main thing is to fight, at least to defend oneself – because they attack not only the weak, but also those who allow themselves to be attacked!

The project is implemented by Chernihiv Polytechnic National University in cooperation with the Human Rights Foundation and the University of Tartu (Estonia). The project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia.
