Today, more and more young people face the problem of employment after university. Before entering the university everyone dreams of a great job in their specialty. But these dreams are shattered by the realities of the Ukrainian employment market. Honestly, I myself faced this problem after receiving a bachelor’s degree in finance. From the second year I tried to find a niche in which I will work. Studying only, I saw how my classmates got a job in a bank. But what awaits a financier with incomplete higher education? Of course, the call center and work with clients. Or work in a supermarket at the checkout. These two areas are the most common among the job offers for students of my specialty.
But even after graduation it is not so easy to get a decent job – there is a lack of experience, lack of skills… The main reason for this is the violation of the relationship in the system “education – science – production”. This situation is due to a number of factors, including the gap between university curricula and the needs of enterprises, and hence the lack of qualifications of young professionals and their lower competitiveness compared to other age groups; lack of necessary information about the labor market and future profession for entrants; choice of specialty by prestige, not by content, etc. In my opinion, the state should pay more attention to the education and development of young people, in particular:
– to conduct effective career guidance work in schools – this will increase the awareness of future students about learning opportunities and the specifics of future employment;
– to make the curriculum at the university as appropriate as possible to the needs of employers – this approach minimizes the risk that the student will be denied a job due to lack of necessary skills and abilities;
– to establish by law the mandatory provision of the first job – this will be possible through effective cooperation between universities and enterprises, when employers will be able to “order” specialists for themselves;
– to expand the opportunities for internships, make them available to the vast majority of students – no matter whether they are domestic or foreign, it will give students the opportunity to try as a specialist in various fields and choose the desired specialization for the future, minimizing the risk of lack of work due to lack of experience.
Such improvements require time and resources. But already now every student can take a step towards the dream job thanks to various competitions, grants and scholarships, opportunities to travel for internships, just self-development. From my own experience, this helps to develop comprehensively and form a competitive resume for future work. Don’t wait for steps from the state – create your future yourself!
